Marine-tex is applied to the milled cut-outs in the stock. The action is then put in place and clamped for the bedding material to harden. After the bedding material has properly cured, the barreled receiver is then broken free of the stock. The excess bedding material is cleaned up and the action is re-assembled for test firing to make sure the bedding process was a success.
These pictures show the cuts made to the top of the mortise area of the stock for the bedding system. They provide a more consistent and stable surface for the receiver to rest on. This bedding procedure aids in accuracy when compared to a traditional non-bedded stock.

This picture shows how well the gas cylinder and gas cylinder lock have been fit. Proper fitting parts are crucial to accuracy. The fit was attained by grinding the mating surfaces until they turned up dead center.

The theme of this project is to take a 1940's military M1-Garand and convert it into a long range tack driver capable of MOA type groupings at 600yds and beyond. In this project the gun is to get a complete overhaul aesthetically with a new gray laminated stock and replacement parts for the original pieces. The gun is also to have a number of upgraded features including a heavy match grade cut-rifled barrel from Krieger, a bedding system, an improved trigger function to reduce the pull weight and eliminate travel (creep), polished and honed internals, a National Match front sight, an adjustable gas plug, and a Badger Ordnance stainless steel forged gas cylinder.

Out with the old...                                      In with the new...

The Krieger heavy barrel required modification to allow for proper fitting of parts from a variety of manufacturers. Under side of barrel was polished so that the operating rod would function reliably. Final match grade chambering to the .30-06 Sprg cartridge, re-barreling, the new gas cylinder, adjustable gas plug, and front sight have been fitted. Fitting is complete!

As can be seen from the following picture, the laminated stock parts have been inletted and are ready for the bedding. The next step is to bed the stock and test fire the gun to make sure everything goes as planned and, most importantly, that the gun can shoot.

Various pictures of the bedding process

All the metal parts were bead blasted to a 320 grit finish and blued. The stock was finished using the Dietrich Gunsmithy signature satin application which provides an outstanding feel.
